Writing Assignment 5

In Writing Assignment 5, I was prompted to take and use 8 photos to tell a story of an event in my beat. I did my story on the math and science night at Germantown Elementary School.

Germantown Elementary School hosted Math and Science Night for students and parents to learn about
the importance and the expectations for math and science in Memphis Schelby County Schools while
also making learning fun.

Math and Science Night had educational games and activities for students to get involved in, trivia and
club signups to encourage attendance.

Lori Newborn, an instructional facilitator at Germantown Elementary, helped organize the event and
believed that the event was a success and hopes to build more success in the future.

“The turnout was great. We are excited about the number of families that that came to Math and
Science Night, and we hope to keep increasing that number as the years go on” Newborn said.

Charles Hayes, a Middle School Science Advisor for Memphis Shelby County Schools, helped with the
organization of the event and took part in many of the science activities.

Science experiments and demonstrations along with math games were used to show students and
parents that there are different ways to learn.

“Students are immersed in hands-on math and science activities” Hayes said, “They are able to have fun
while learning. This is important because it keeps them engaged and interested in what they are
learning.”

Club signups at the end of the night were added this year as a way to encourage attendance. The
students were excited at the chance for a first come first serve club signup.

“We also had club signups the same night to encourage more families to attend, and I think that it did
cause a great deal of excitement to close out the night” Newborn said.

Lori Newborn believes that Math and Science Night is something that will continue as a yearly event and
thinks there are some great ways that they can improve the event in the future.

“Goin forward, I would like to have some activities led by student leaders at GES. Having students
involved gives them the opportunity to show what they have learned. It also would also provide more
incentive for more families to come and enjoy this event.”
